Recently, I had a conversation with a teacher of the modern golf swing. He has been teaching the game of golf to others for decades.  We, of course, got into a huge debate about the differences  between the mechanics of the modern golf swing and a true rotational swing.  As usual, I let him speak of his conclusions on the subject matter first.  He talked for a good hour and a half straight about how perfectly conceived the fundamentals of the modern golf swing really were.  In his speech I was able to see his convicition to his beliefs and understood that when it was my turn to speak I had better be perpaired.

He talked about the grip, posture and ball position as being absolutes. Then he covered the movements of the body and the path that the club needed to make. Back swing and down swing. He talked about putting, chipping, pitching and every aspect of the short game. He really knew his stuff.

So when he concluded, my question to him was two fold. If this concept of the modern swing was so perfectly conceived then why is it so difficult for the average golfer to produce and why has the national or global handicap not changed for over 30 years. And if the short game stuff was that great then why is chipping one of the worst stats on the PGA Tour.

His response kind of shocked me when he said, “People just don’t practice the right things and you have no idea how hard the courses they are playing really are”.  If I didn’t know better, I might have accepted that answer. However, my response was, “With all of the information available today on the modern swing how do you honestly believe that”. “People watch the Golf Channel, they read things like Golf Digest and they have all kinds of different aids they can purchase to help them in understanding it, so when you say people don’t practice the right things it kind of pisses me off.” I quickly followed with an excuse my language, out of respect for the old man.  As far as the courses being difficult for the Tour players ,I thought to myself, had nothing to do with why the chipping stats were what they were.  These are the best players in the world…. Anyways I said, ”I see people hitting balls at driving ranges and golf courses all over the place and what I do not see is the results the modern swing produces in a consistant manner”. ” All I do see is more confussion and fustration.”

Again, he said, “people just don’t practice the right things”. Now that it was my turn to explain the true rotational swing I just hoped he was going to listen as intently as I did to him. As I started off, I told him I thought the modern swing was so difficult for average golfers because the movements that needed to be made did not match up. He asked, “What do you mean”.  I said,” If a right handed golfer needs to turn or rotate their shoulders to the right, then move the club vertically to the top, then drop the club into the slot, while truning their lower body back toward the left, then stop the hips for a brief moment and let the arms and shoulders and club swing by through the hitting area, then have the force of that action pull the lower body into the finish position just does not make sense and it does not add up”.  “Plus, I will not even mention the fact of the stress this puts on all parts of the body”.

In mathametics rotation is described as an operation that rotates a geometric object around a fixed point. Vertical means being in a position or direction perpendicular to the plane of the horizion.  If I applied these two forces into my golf swing they are going to cause all kinds of problems if I am off just the slightest. And I am a really good player. Timing these two movements together and then in the opposite direction, is even difficult for the best players in the world at times. This will always be the biggest issue with the modern swing.

A true rotaional swing I explained removes the lateral rotaion of the shoulders along with the vertical movements of lifting the club to the top with the hands and arms. The second that came out of my mouth, he replied, “that is not possible, how are you going to swing the club”? At least I knew he was paying attention to what I was saying. So I continued. First of all, if you think about the body correctly and the way it is structured or made then maybe it is very possible. The body’s skeleton is comprised of a spine, hips, legs, feet, arms hands shoulders and skull. The shoulders are not connected to this frame work by bone. This giving them more freedom of movement.

If you understand what it means to work under your spine and to use the levers in the body correctly then you will start to begin to understand true rotation. There are vertical movements but they are not caused by lifting, instead they are cuased by an action and the use of levers. If one side of an object moves down the other side will move up. If a lever stores a maximum load, when it is releaded it will release a maximum load. The rotation of the rotational swing happens around and under the spine.  “Let me prove it to you”, I said. “By all means”, he said. So I continued.

What you need to do is stand straight up and extend your arms straight out from your sides, then move your feet out like in a comfortable golf stance and do this. While leaving your arms extended make the finger tips of your left hand touch the inside of your right knee. “Make sure you leave your arms extended”, I said.  Now, from there leave your body in that position and move your arms and hands into a position as if they were holding a club at the top. He looked at me and said, “Even though my shoulders are at a stepper angle than they have ever been in my life for my golf swing, there is absoultely no pressure on my back “. “But where or how do I get back to the ball without putting the clubhead in the  ground  3 feet behind the ball.”  ”Great question” I said, and explained the movements that must happen in the lower body to shallow out the club. He looked at me and said he felt like a little kid waiting to open a Christmas present on Christmas morning.

After several hours of conversation he started to realize there really may be a better way to swing and play golf. When I talked about the short game and putting and shared my methods with him, he got even more excited. I told him in putting why does every teacher in the world get a player into a position to where they are looking at the golf ball out of the bottom part of their eyes. We are predators by birth and should be looking at the ball from the center of our eyes at all times. When I put him in this position he turned and looked at me and said,” I have never seen my line so big and clear before, its amazing.”

We did not have that much time left in the day so we wrapped it up and said good bye and good luck. I promise you this though, the guy has been teaching others to play golf for decades using the modern swing fundamentals, but I am willing to bet my house he is teaching the rotary swing fundamentals and short game principles. You to can learn these fundamentals at www.golflessonacademy.com  we look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,

Chris

What we need to understand is that we can learn different things about our rotation using the idea of Hogans plane of class as it relates to our rotary swing. Even though the path of our shoulders is different and the use of our core and lower body absolutely unheard of. If we think of the plane as it relates to the rotary swing it will help create a better mental image in your mind. Please watch the video below. www.golflessonacademy.com/pressroom

Hello everyone, I hope your learning of the rotary swing is going well. Today I am going to address some of the feelings you should be feeling in the lower body. As you go from P1 to P4 you have to feel as though you are getting to these positions with the lower part of our spine “Not”, the top part. If you feel the top part of the spine getting to P4 first, then you are shutting down your turn and restricting the natural rotation of the hips and core.

How do we think about this? We know that our spine is in the center of our body and that our shoulders (top) and hips (bottom) rest on the sides of our spine so this is where we will start. First, you need to get into your posture P1 without a club and do what I am telling you to. While in the address position put your left hand slightly above your chest on the center of our collar bone.  While leaving your left hand in this position proceed to placing your right hand on your lower back, right in the center, where your spine would be located.

Now, what you need to do is go to P4 correctly but using the proper movements and rotation of the lower body. If you do this correctly when at the top you feel your right hand  (or your lower spine) on the right side of your left hand. Now, do the same thing and just turn to the top of the swing just using your shoulders to get to P4. What you will know notice is that the right hand ( or lower part of the spine) is now on the left side of the left hand. What this is showing you is that you have moved the top part of your spine to get to the top of the backswing. It is also in turn, shutting down the rotation in the hips and the power source of the core.

We must at all times for full shots and full swings remember that it is the bottom part of our spine that gets us to the top, “Not”, the top part of our spine.

To our valued customers that have purchased our videos. We have recognized in some of our students that posture is not being done every time correctly. In the rotary golf swing the posture is the foundation that makes this work so well. We suggest that during your pre-shot routine you set up going over the posture videos step by step in your head as quickly as possible. So that you can make sure that your foundation is set to make the best swing you know. It is imperative that you do not let your shoulders past the plane of your toes.

You can download the videos on Posture for free at http://www.golflessonacademy.com/freegolfvideos.html

Take care, Pete

For all of you that have purchased the videos from the proshop this video will help you understand the angle that needs to be maintained in the back of the right hand from P2 to P4. When you feel this correctly it is very difficult to lift the club to the top of the back swing with the arms. This is very important to understanding the NO LIFTING concept.  Please watch the video below.

Also the proper grip will help you feel the action of the right hand staying on top of the shaft during the rotary golf swing.

As always, any questions you may have please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Chris

Have you ever asked yourself why so many people have a hard time hitting the ball straight with any distance? The impossible shot patteren most people would say. However, the reality is that hitting it straight and far is obtainable with a true rotary swing.

Why is it so hard to produce this type of shot with the modern golf swing? The answer is simple. If the right hand for a right haned player gets on the side of the shaft it can allow the club face to stay open (late release) or close to rapidly ahead of the laterally truning body (the flip).

When you add up the movements they don’t add up at all. A laterally rotating body with a vertical lifting of the club does not make sense in physics and this is the reason the straight shot is so difficult to produce using the modern golf swing fundamentals.

What the modern swing is good at producing is an over the top move with the right hand on the side of the shaft. This would be an average move for over 80% of the golfing population. 15% of the golfing population would swing in to out to across. 4.5% would swing in to out to in and an amazing .5% actually swing the club in to in to in. Players like Ben Hogan, Mike Austin and long drive competitor Jaacob Bowden are in this .5%.

If the right hand is on the side of the shaft when starting the downswing it forces the hands to move away from or across the turning or lack of turning body. And this is why the modern swing does not produce a straight shot pattern. So we have come to hear terms like,” he plays a fade”, “she plays a draw” and what a shot maker. So we have conditioned ourselves to believe that if it is so difficult for the pros to hit it straight then it if I don’t hit it straight, NO BIG DEAL!

However, there is truely a way to hit it straight and produce a true rotary golf swing with more power and accurate than you could ever imagine. This is what we are teaching here at the www.golflessonacademy.com come and join us and I promise you won’t be let down.

Sincerely,

Chris

I must admit that the better your foot work gets, the better the motions of the rotary golf swing get. Again, for those of you that have purchased the golf videos feel the feet and what they are doing at each position. You may feel as though this slows you down during your back swing, but his is what you want to happen as we are acellerating though the ball, not away from it.

The smoother it feels, under control in the back swing, the more accuracy and control will be obtained.  As we start the swing we must feel the balance that the proper footwork gives us. We stay in balance on the way back and stay in balance on the way through, period. It is when we lose the connection of our foot work that we then can lift the club or do other things incorrectly in our swing.

Remember, review P1 through P8 and refresh yourselves on what the feet are actually doing. Where is the weight when you are at these positions in the swing? Then when you are practicing really concentrate on where that weight is, the more you feel where it is at all times the better your balance and motions will become.

We are not striving for perfection but instead for excellence! It is our pursuit of excellence that allows us to become world class players. The more excellent we get at making the motions the better we become at producing the swing.

As always any questions will be answered by sending an email to: proshop@golflessonacademy.com

Sincerely,

Chris

I have been working with one of my mini tour players and we have been fine tuning the rotary swing. For those of you that have purchased the videos in the proshop please pay careful attention to what I am about  to write.

We need to understand what the hands are doing a little more clearly. As they move from address to P2 you have to feel the left hand going under the right with the proper footwork. (If you do this feeling the proper foot work you will never miss P2) As you make the move to P3 the left hand must stay under the right or right hand on top of the left. At P4 you will feel as though the right hand is under the left but in reality it is still on top. The same position it started in at P1.

As we start the down swing and follow though P5 through P8 we must at all times keep the right hand on top of the left. ( or shaft ) If we come back to the ball with our right hand on the side of the left our hands will kick out and away from our body. However, if we keep our right hand on top of the left at all times the hands will come back and through  the same place they started.

If you do this doing the foot work correctly and in balance because of the proper footwork which is explained in the videos your ball sticking will become even better. Of course this would just be the opposite for left handed players.

If anyone has any questions on this please feel free to email me at: proshop@golflessonacademy.com

Sincerely,

Chris
